Summer Staycation

Well, the summer sun that hardly came out is officially retiring, by my count, tomorrow - the first day back at school. I thought it'd be appropriate to compile a brief montage of our Hawaii-didn't-work-out-but-let's-make-the-most-of-this "staycation." We went to fairly local whereabouts and spent the time creating memories, which, for us, is what it's all about anyway.

Phase I - Summer School
Think: Kids, Breakfast, Two weeks of math/reading.

Phase II - 18-Month Anniversary
Think: Food (of course), Ducks, No couple picture! O_O

Phase III - 17-Mile Drive
Think: Cameras galore, Beautiful Scenery, Family

Phase IV - Alameda County Fair

Think: Homegroup, Entertainment, Food

Phase V - Monterey
Think: Bibs, Sea creatures, Monterey Bay Inn

Phase VI - SF Academy of Sciences (failed)
Think: 3.5-hr-wait Too long, Hot dog + Pretzel, Go home

Phase VII - Post-Wedding Chop
Think: Short, Donated, Happy

Phase VIII - Regeneration Camp (him) / Stay with Parents (her)
Think: Solid preaching, Sitting next to J.Mac + eating his chips, Lecrae

Phase IX - Host Dinner / Party

Think: Crazy, Food, Fun

Phase X - Watch "The Music Man" (musical)
Think: Woodminster, J.Hong + Student's family, Unflattering pictures

There were also errands, job hunting, and in-service meetings towards the end. But those weren't as fun.

Mrs. Woo off to pick her first-day outfit, brush up on some teacher tips, and shower!

What was the highlight of your summer?

You scream, I scream, we all scream for...

 ...a Banana Split Party!!!

July was National Ice Cream month (who determines these?), and so we want to celebrate with a party. Our schedule didn't allow for this to happen before the month was over, so we're going to extend the celebration for another week. And what's a night of banana splits without some rounds of Bananagrams? So...

You're invited!

Who: Up to 14 people who sign up!
(We can get 2 games going at the same time)
What: Bananagrams, banana splits, and fun
When: Monday, August 9 @ 7:30pm
Where: The Woo Residence
Why: For some "split! dump! banana!" action

Entrance Fee: Banana split ingredient(s)
Rides: Not provided

If you can make it, please indicate the item you will be bringing below so that we do not have too much of one ingredient. Hope to see you here for some dessert and games! :)

Our table is set

Jonny has been the self-proclaimed "most patient reader" in awaiting the results of our last Poker Night.

It started with gchat messages like this:
who won?
  i think i've waited patiently
  for your blog
it has been 6 days since wednesday

Since then, I've gotten more written and verbal reminders about the suspense I've been creating with him. But it still baffles me why he didn't just ask Freddy or another contestant...

Without further ado, it's my pleasure to announce that after two whole months we've finally filled our last seat at the table! (It's going to be an interesting championship game as I look at those who will be in attendance.) Bring to the table your poker faces, empty tummies, and some level of cordiality - and welcome to the table...

...R.Shu! Congratulations!

Our winner during the pre-victory meal at Yoshi's.

Fresh oysters complements of the chef due to our acquaintance with one of the waiters, whom I haven't seen since sophomore year of college!

Roll call:

1. Mrs. Woo
2. (J)onny/Mrs. Woo
3. Freddy
4. Mr. Woo
5. Tadamus
6. R.Shu
Champion: ???

An e-mail will be sent out to coordinate the details for the final game!

Who do you think is going to take all? ;

Are YOU the next Poker Champ?

The night that Jonny has been waiting for...

he will have to still wait for as the Woos have been quite the busy bees around here. But it's about time for a break, isn't it? Pooki deserves it after what the TPAs are putting him through.

In good timing, Mr. Woo will be gone to Shepherds Conference later this week (he's super excited about it, having asked admin for these days off - back in October), which means - paarTAAAY! (teenage flashback, anyone?) Just kidding, kind of... As I will be very lonely, Mr. Woo has consented to letting me host our final Poker Night all by my lonesome before our Championship game!

Here we go:

You're invited!

Who: The first 5 people to sign up!
What: To our (somewhat) monthly PN
When: Wednesday, March 2 @ 7pm
Where: The Woo Residence
Why: For some "all in" action

Entrance Fee: Free*
Rides: Not provided

*Sorry, dinner not provided this time around. Our fridge is going hungry since half of the family will be gone for 4 nights. I'll make it up to you at Championship.

Won by a tad

In honor of Tadamus' birthday, I find it a very appropriate time to announce our winner of Poker Night #5!

Remember the contest I was going to hold? Here was the challenge: Crack open 3 pistachios that barely have a sliver of an opening. It all happened so fast that all I got was a picture of the end result:

Thanks to Tad, I could finally(!) eat those long-awaited 3 pistachios. Now, you might think I had an ulterior motive to the challenge, but I like to think of it as a win-win situation.

Here's what our friend won:

After a cornbread chili casserole, we started the game. (Note to self: Maybe we'll save the ultra lean meat for burgers instead of the chili...)

And again, Tad won. Here's his second prize, the wrapping courtesy of Mr. Woo:

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

Still waiting for it...

"What is this???" (insert Mr. Woo's hysterical laughter)

Maybe it's the fact that our dear brother had played pranks on others in college, but it's just so funny to pull one on him. Too bad secretly putting bugs in his food is not going to phase him... Go ahead, ask him why not. :P

Moving on, here's his real prize:

Check out that dimple. It's a crater because he's so happy!

Okay, the night was not all about Tad, and I'm done embarrassing him. Let's introduce the other contestants who get an 'A' for effort. (Who made up that line because it's Effort, not Affort. Wait a minute... Is it "You get an 'A' for trying so hard" and not a trying-to-be-clever saying???)

Community turkey leg, community sunglasses - same difference. Come to think of it, JRitzi - why dost thou not join the passing of the shades?

So there it is folks. Another player in the Hall of Fame. Oh, and to keep y'all informed, there is talk about extending one more player into the Championship game.

The Woo Society's Hall of Fame:

2. (J)onny/Mrs. Woo

Until next time,

Breaking up is hard to do...

That's why we're resuming our Poker Night! This one makes #5.

Oh, how I have missed witnessing the triumphs and defeats, humor and delirious effect (Dan here is new to the game yet embraces it all) of the game. (Instead we've been bogged down and consumed with work... We covet your prayers.)

The Woo's request your presence to our monthly Poker Night,
to be held at our residence
on Tuesday, October 20th
at 6 o'clock in the evening.

A non-vegetarian dinner will be provided
along with a contest + prize to make up our absence of PN in the month of September.
We apologize that rides will not be provided.
Feel free to bring your face along.

As usual, the first 5 to respond are guaranteed their place in the tourney! :)

We are soon approaching our limit of 7 in the first Championship Tournament! Have a look:
